India is currently experiencing a surge in coal consumption as it grapples with a severe heatwave and disruptions to its energy supply, issues that are further complicated by ongoing geopolitical tensions. According to CNBC, the intense heatwave has led to a significant increase in electricity demand, which in turn has prompted a rise in coal-fired power generation. In April, India's coal-fired power plants generated an average of 164.9 gigawatts, marking a 3.5% increase from the 160.7 gigawatts recorded in the previous year. This increase underscores the country's continued reliance on coal, which accounts for over 70% of its electricity generation, despite ongoing efforts to expand its renewable energy capacity.
