El Niño Strengthens: NOAA Predicts Strong Fall and Winter Events
US · Published Aug 23, 2026
The National Weather Service has confirmed that El Niño conditions are intensifying, with NOAA estimating a greater than 90% chance of a very strong event during the Northern Hemisphere's fall and winter seasons.
Meteorologists have been monitoring unusually warm waters in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific since July, with NOAA's August 13 update increasing confidence in a strong El Niño to over 90%.

Impact & Risks

El Niño's strengthening is expected to bring significant weather changes across the United States. The southern U.S. may experience above-normal precipitation, raising concerns about flooding, while the Northeast and Pacific Northwest could see drier conditions. The winter season may bring sharp cold snaps, particularly if Arctic air interacts with moisture from the southern jet stream, leading to heavy rain, ice, or snow in various regions. These weather shifts could also impact agriculture, energy demand, and infrastructure, posing risks to communities and industries (Straight Arrow, 2026).
