Hurricane Karina Strengthens in the Pacific Ocean
• Tropical Storm Karina has intensified into a Category 1 hurricane in the Pacific Ocean as of August 30,
• The storm, with maximum sustained winds of 80 mph (130 km/h), is located approximately 820 miles (1,325 kilometers) southwest of the southern tip of Mexico's Baja California Peninsula. Moving northwest at 15 mph (24 km/h), Karina is expected to remain far out at sea and could strengthen into a major hurricane (Category 3 or higher) later this week.
Impact & Risks
Although Hurricane Karina is not expected to make landfall, it poses risks to coastal areas of southwest Mexico and the Baja California Peninsula. Swells generated by the storm could result in dangerous surf and rip current conditions, posing a threat to swimmers and small watercraft.
